Remove ads in Windows Live Messenger

This a short and quick how-to on removing those bothersome ads at the bottom of Live Messenger main window. Lets get started..

Go here: http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/
Download Resource Hacker ver. 3.4.0 (Zip File 541kb).
After unzipping the contents open ResHacker.exe.
Open in Resource Hacker (File -> Open...) msgsres.dll located in (in most cases): C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger
Click on View -> Find Text... on the menu bar.
On the "Find what:" field put in:
<Constrainer layoutpos=top ID=Atom(SSConstrainer) Layout=FillLayout()
Change layoutpos value from top to none.
The line should now look like:
<Constrainer layoutpos=none ID=Atom(SSConstrainer) Layout=FillLayout()
Click on Compile Script.
Click Save (File -> Save)
Open Messenger. Enjoy your now ad-less version of Live Messenger!

Great post, simple and to the point.

Do you have anymore msgsres.dll 'hacks'?

I have browsed the Web and found many, but they're not as direct as your post.

There is a program called 'A-Patch' that has numerous hacks for Live Messenger, but I do not trust 3rd-party software hacks especially for a messaging client.

I'd rather do it myself.

I agree with the DIY approach Richard. As for anymore hacks, I will have to look around, I am sure they are some more to be found.

I did the ads one mainly because that's the main reason why most people look for those bloated nonsense 3rd party apps, to get rid of those pesky ads.

Keep watching this blog, I am sure to post something whenever I find it.

As far as i know, removing ads is the main reason to hack this .dll..

Can you hack other Dlls to remove other annoyances? Most likely yes, I'll look into it and I'll post if anything..

I used a few patches and all of them work BUT after about 3 days after installing, my file transfer starts to be real slow ( and when i say slow, i mwan a 5MB transfer will take as long as 20 mins instead of just 3 min ).. Glad i came across this tutorial.. Cheers m8!!

just fyi the new live messenger folder is found in:
Program files> windows live> messenger when looking for the .dll

I've tried something myself, and it works - to get rid of LiveSearch bar:
...
7. Find: element[id=atom(idSearchContainer)]
8. This line is followed by { layoutpos:bottom; }
Change layoutpos value to none.
...

Great topic guys,

I have another fix, that gets rid of the text ad in the messaging window:

Same file, search:

textadbanner id=atom(adbanner)

this should show up twice, so change both cases from "adbanner" to "adbanner1"

This worked for me.

Thanks for the post. I went a little farther with this though and removed the entire parent elements for the ads and search bar. The parent element starts with the capital "<Element" tag above the child elements and ends with the closing "</Element>".

I must be missing something, this doesn't work.

I'm running A-Patch and Messenger Plus! (for skinning), and Plus! brings the ads back in where A-Patch removed them. I did the above fix, and the bottom ads on the main interface are still there.

hey, all the tips were great thanks =]

but i was wondering if anyone knew how to remove the banner at the top (just below the find a contact bit) it says :

"Learn more about the Customer Experience Improvement Program."

i had a look myself but with no luck =[

any help would be great as thiswould finish it off =]=]

Great! Now I've disabled the tabs and edited the layoutpos for both the SSConstrainer and the idSearchContainer to none, and Windows Live looks like a serious messenger such as IBM's Sametime 7.5.

Great info, wanted to get rid of that banner for a long long time now.

To whoever asked about the "Learn more about the Customer Experience" I just pressed it and chose "Don't want to ..." or something like that, and it went away.

Hey there

Anyone using MSN Messenger 9 BeTA?
To remove the ad in there just type the following string:

Constrainer layoutpos=1 ID=Atom(SSConstrainer) Layout=FillLayout()

THe rest is all the same layoutpos=none
